After a journey through the narrow canyon known as the siq, this imposing structure, carved into pink sandstone cliffs and known as Al Khazneh or The Treasury, greets the visitor to the ancient Nabatean capital of Petra, located in the southwestern desert of Jordan. It was breathtaking for me to see in person, so stunning is the effect of glimpsing the building little by little as you move forward through the siq and then suddenly seeing this spectacular ornate, Greek style facade set against the high pink sandstone cliff.
Who can forget this imposing view when Harrison Ford, Sean Connery and Denholm Elliott ride horses through the siq in the third episode of the Indiana Jones movie saga - Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade? I am positive that I am not the only person inspired to go to Jordan to see Petra because of this movie.
The site also contains tombs and temples carved into the pink sandstone cliffs, earning its nickname, the "Rose City."
It is one of the most imposing and impressive sites I have ever seen.
