Dancers with Hats, Bread and Lanterns, Atlixcayotl Dance Festival

The Huei (Big) Atlixcayotl Dance Festival celebrated its fiftieth anniversary in 2015. The festival is celebrated on the last Sunday in September, on or near the Day of San Miguel. Hundreds of dancers from towns throughout the state of Puebla perform their traditional dances on the Hill of San Miguel in the town of Atlixco. I documented this dance festival for over ten years and wrote the first book on the festival in 1981, after interviewing two of three original founders of the festival. A photograph of one of those founders is included in my black and white gallery - Señora Beristain (Maria de los Angeles Flores de Beristain), below.
