Children in Ngorongoro, Tanzania

The second lodge we stayed in on my tour of Tanzania was in the Ngorongoro highlands, an area made famous by the anthropological work of the Leakey family. In nearby Oldupai Gorge they found the first remains of Homo Habilis, an early hominid,

Exploring the area around the lodge, I came upon this scene of young children carrying buckets of water and leading a team of oxen, with a house far in the background. The colorful clothing, the stark white of the oxen, the iron rich red earth, the brightly colored buckets and the various greens of the foliage draw you into the photograph, but you can't avoid thinking about the roll these children play in the economy of the country.
